Martika (born Marta Marrero on May 18, 1969 in Whittier, California) is a female pop singer actress from the 80s and 90s. She began her career in an uncredited role as one of the orphan girls in the 1982 film 'Annie' which led to her being cast on the children's television program 'Kids Incorporated' as Gloria and stayed on the show until 1986. In 1984, Martika appeared in Mr. T's motivational video 'Be Somebody.or Be Somebody's Fool!' Which featured future singers Shanice Wilson and Stacy 'Fergie' Ferguson (who also starred on 'Kids Inc' with her).
The second single 'Toy Soldiers' became Martika's biggest hit to date, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for 2 weeks. The song also peaked at #5 on the U.K. Singles, topped the charts in New Zealand and was successful in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Sweden & Switzerland. The song's chorus featured Martika's former 'Kids Inc' castmates such as Stacy Ferguson, Rahsaan Patterson, Renee Sands and later 'Kids Inc' members Jennifer Love Hewitt & Devyn Puett on backup vocals.
The fourth single 'Water' peaked at #59 on the U.K. Singles chart, but failed to make the charts in the United States. The last single 'Alibis' was released, but didn't make the charts at all. In 1990, Martika co-wrote the song 'Kiss Me Quick' with Michael Jay and Marvin Morrow.
The song was given to freestyle/pop singer Alisha for her third album 'Bounce Back' and Martika provided backing vocals on the track. During that same year, Martika wrote & recorded the song 'Blue Eyes Are Sensitive to the Light' for the soundtrack to the film 'Arachnophobia,' but producers didn't like her vocals and the song ended up being re-recorded by Sara Hickman for the film. In 1991, Martika wrote the song 'Temptation' for Patti LaBelle's album 'Burnin'.' In 1997, Martika's greatest hits compliation album 'The Best of Martika: More Than You Know' was released and achieved sales figures of over 500,000 copies internationally.
In 2000, during the Latin pop music explosion, she returned to the music scene, singing backing vocals on various projects and contributing lyrics to other artists, but she failed to attract any major record label attention for herself. In 2001, Martika built a website for her fans entitled martika.net. And released a remix of a new self-recorded song entitled 'The Journey.' She also recorded a track entitled 'Monday' for a new solo album which according to the website was on its way. As a free download on mp3.com's music service,'The Journey' received 5,000 hits, but the website was later shut down and the album was never released. In 2005, Oppera released their self-titled sophomore album and Martika promoted the album with a Borders bookstore tour. In 2010, Martika starred in a web-based television action show entitled 'J8ded' under the name 'Vida Edit.'
She co-produced the show along with Michael who produced, directed, wrote and starred in it as well. In October of 2011, Martika discontinued her 'Vida Edit' stage name and launched a new personal website.
She began to upload video blogs promising an upcoming album. In November of that same year, Martika announced that the new album would be released in early 2012 and contain primarily house & dance music entitled 'The Mirror Ball.' Because of those circumstances, the recording of Martika's album was delayed, but a second single entitled 'SlowMotion' is expected to be released.
As of October 1, 2012, Martika's Australian tour was cancelled, but her official website states that the Mirror Ball Tour in the United States is scheduled to begin in Chicago on November 19, 2012 with additional dates in Elk Grove and Cincinatti.
