You would need to use a third-party tool such as AOMEI to move the partitions before joining them. Remember to back up your data beforehand and to test if the backups are readable! I downloaded AOMEI and tried to move the unallocated partition right after the C: partition with no success. I got a message that the D: partition is too much fragmented which isn't true since I defragmented the partition before.

I had the same problem that you have and got this message but I guess you've solved this issue, since it's more than a month. But you can make the bootable media from Aomei itself, just like that.
